Quietest Concrete Pavement to Open to Traffic |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The quietest concrete pavement texture in North America will open to traffic for the first time after the culmination of a collaborative industry effort.
Last week, ACPA member company Quality Saw & Seal, Inc. diamond-ground 1,200 feet of the surface creating the new texture on Northbound I-355 in Chicago. After grinding the section, the texture performed at just under 100 dBA, confirming in the field the desired results achieved in laboratory and test facility settings.
|
|
| |
This represented the latest milestone in researching and implementing quiet concrete pavement surfaces. As previously reported in ACPA's ON THE GRADE, the texture was first achieved on two test sections at the Minnesota DOT's Mn/Road Research facility in June (see related article, "Breakthrough Testing: ACPA Member Achieves Quietest |

Concrete Pavement Surface").
The purpose of the Mn/Road test sections was to validate the concept |

that fin profile controlled the noise generation characteristics and to validate the efficacy of the Tire Pavement Test Apparatus (TPTA) used by Purdue to conduct ACPA's laboratory-based, proof-testing research.
It is widely expected this pavement section will be watched closely by contactors and agencies wanting to strike a balance between surface characteristics and the other positive features of concrete pavements.
Other stakeholders involved were the Illinois Tollway Authority, the owner, as well as K-5 Construction Corp., the contractor. ACPA's Larry Scofield, P.E., Director of Environmental Technology, performed the testing on the new section under traffic.

Tech Support, Advocacy Top ACPA Airport Activities |
|

|
|
Technical support and advocacy are the two key focal points of ACPA's Airports market.
ACPA receives an average two to three calls per day just on technical questions, according to ACPA's Gary Mitchell, P.E., Director of Airports. Often, Mitchell will review design proposals to optimize construction plans before consultants submit them in the bidding process.
A small sample of topics ACPA is addressing include:
• Alkali-silica reactivity mitigation
Concrete pavement mix design reviews
• Optimizing subbase materials
• Rained-on concrete pavements
• Runway jointing plans
"Our main focus is helping address issues of importance to airport owners, consultants, and contractors," Mitchell said.
As noted, a key role for ACPA also is advocating the use of |

ACPA Offers Free Report
on Tire/Pavement Noise Results |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The latest in ACPA's free R&T UPDATE series covers joint slap effect, a key factor in tire/pavement noise.
"R&T Update 8.04: The Joint Slap Effect" documents ACPA's testing of joint slap effect, which occurs when a vehicle travels over a faulted pavement, a pavement with wide joints, or a pavement where joints have been overbanded or are missing sealant.
The four-page, glossy document includes:
• descriptions of the equipment and research methods used;
• detailed graphs; and
• preliminary field validation testing results.

Industry Team Presents Concrete Overlay Potential ... A team of ACPA representatives this week presented concrete overlays as a strategy for both maintenance and reconstruction in Louisiana.
As is the case in many states, rehabilitation and maintenance will play a large part in future projects in Louisiana.
ACPA explained that concrete pavement overlays are a viable maintenance and rehabilitation method, not just limited to large reconstruction projects. |
|
 |
|
| |
The team used Route U.S. 425 as an example of a successful concrete overlay application in Louisiana. The construction has, throughout its more than four-year lifetime, stood up to daily traffic loads without showing pavement distress or requiring maintenance.
