Noise
Study Shows Surprising Results
A
study of the effects of noise from airplane engines and traffic
shows some surprising results on children's reading comprehension
and memory, new research shows.
University of London (Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry)
professor Stephen Stansfield, PhD, et al, studied the effects
of noise on 2,800 children (aged 9 and 10) at schools in the Netherlands,
the United Kingdom, and Spain.
After collecting the data, the researchers showed that aircraft
noise impaired reading comprehension and memory.
Road traffic noise, however, was actually linked with better scores
on a memory test. That was a surprise and deserves more attention,
said Stansfield and colleagues.
The finding of road traffic noise contradicts findings from other
studies, the researchers said. In addition, they reported there
were no links seen between aircraft- or road-noise and self-reported
health or mental health. Other studies have shown effects of aircraft
noise on blood pressure, say the researchers.
The study results were published in the British medical journal,
The Lancet. (Sources: The Lancet.com,
Bloomberg, and wire service reports.)
